Barely over a month after its theatrical release, the DreamWorks showcase of Filipino culture/mythology has arrived on digital.
Forgotten Island premiered in theaters on September 25 and upon release, became critically acclaimed and now sitting at a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Last Tuesday, October 20, DreamWorks uploaded a trailer announcing today’s digital home release for the movie.
On their last night before embarking on separate life paths, best friends Jo and Raissa find a mysterious portal that transports them to Nakali, a mythical island filled with magical creatures they learned about from their Filipino families. As Jo and Raissa search for a way home, they discover their memories are at risk. Will they find a way off the island before they forget each other forever?
Despite near-universal acclaim from both critics and general audiences, the movie quickly dropped off at the box office, only making roughly $36 million in North America and Over $31 million in international markets, for a combined total of approx. $68 million (according to Box Office Mojo). The animated feature film fell over $10 million short of making back its $80 million budget (via the LA Times). One can only speculate what possibly attributed to the box office flop, whether it’s the marketing/possible lack thereof, being overshadowed by competition such as Avengers Endgame: Encore the same day, or appealing to primarily Filipino audiences (somewhat similar to 2022’s Easter Sunday).
Fans can now watch Forgotten Island on platforms including YouTube, Fandango, Apple TV, and Prime Video. The physical release on DVD and Blu-Ray is set for Tuesday, December 1 (as officially reported by Universal Pictures).
The Amazon pre-order for Forgotten Island has the DVD priced at $19.95, Blu-Ray at an additional $5, and the the Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD set at $29.95 (a 14% discount from the regular list price of $34.98).
Forgotten Island’s cast features (but not limited to) songwriter H.E.R as Jo, Liza Soberano as Raissa, Dave Franco as Raww, comedian Jo Koy as Datu, Lea Salonga as Manang, and Ronny Chieng as King Truffle Wuffle. Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado are the directors and screenwriters. The recently deceased Eric Bauza also features as the voice of Duwende leader General Button Wutton (via IMDb).
