Sony has brought AI upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were both patched on October 1 to offer it as an extra graphics option.

That's according to a PlayStation Blog post by Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The technology is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). It is a lighter version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the upscaler that debuted on the PS5 Pro.

Upscaling lets a game render at a lower resolution and rebuild the picture at a higher one. That saves processing power.

How QSSR Fits on the Base Console

Craig wrote that players and developers have asked for PSSR-style image gains on the standard PS5 ever since the Pro launched. PSSR's computational demands had made that impossible until now, he said.

QSSR comes out of Project Amethyst, Sony's AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Craig said it rests on a streamlined neural network (the AI model doing the upscaling) and an implementation hand-tuned for the PS5.

Technology.org pointed out that the standard PS5 has no dedicated machine learning hardware. QSSR runs on the console's existing GPU. The PS5 Pro's PSSR, by contrast, leans on dedicated hardware rated at around 300 TOPS, a measure of AI processing speed.

Sony still calls PSSR the gold standard on PS5 Pro. It says QSSR brings notable improvements to image detail and stability on the base console.

What Insomniac and Sucker Punch Said

Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to Marvel's Wolverine. He named the streets of Madripoor and the alleyways of Shinjuku as places where extra detail shows up.

Fitzgerald described it as a good companion to the game's launch. He also called it a taste of the PS5 Pro experience for PS5 players.

Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, had similar praise. He said QSSR resolves fine detail in Ghost of Yōtei's characters and environments. It does so with a temporal stability not previously possible on the console.

Temporal stability means the image stays steady from frame to frame. Small details shimmer less.

Patry added that the team has long wanted all PS5 players to see the image quality PSSR delivers on PS5 Pro. He called QSSR a positive step towards that goal.

Rollout to Other Games

Sony said QSSR will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers. It looks forward to seeing the improvements in many more titles.

Fitzgerald said he is excited for more games to use QSSR in future. Posts on X in several languages shared the announcement widely, and some of them described it as PS5 Pro-style tech coming to the base console.
