Xbox Issues Official Statement On Day One Game Pass Release Rumors

Microsoft issued an official statement in response to rumors that day-one releases could soon disappear from Xbox Game Pass, saying no such decision has been made. While the statement reveals some additional details about how major changes to the service are made, it does not rule out the possibility of Xbox Game Pass losing day-one titles on the recently leaked timeline.

The speculation originated with ResetEra user and moderator Slayven, who on September 15 claimed Microsoft is considering another major Game Pass restructuring for 2027. The rumored plans include $12.99 and $19.99 ad-supported and ad-free options, respectively, removing new day-one releases sometime between February and April, and separating cloud gaming into a separate subscription. The report also suggested the restructuring may see Microsoft split online multiplayer into a separate add-on that's not part of the entry-level XGP tier like it currently is. Slayven has previously shared accurate information about similar changes, including leaking a big part of Microsoft's October 2025 Xbox Game Pass tier and pricing overhaul. They attributed their latest leak to the same anonymous source.

Xbox Hasn't Finalized Any Additional Game Pass Restructurings

"We regularly test different Game Pass offerings and look at what works best for players in different markets," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Paul Tassi, adding that the company has no changes to announce and, crucially, "no plans that have been finalized." The latter point suggests that the rumored restructuring, even if Slayven's leak is accurate, is not set in stone. The leaker also suggested as much, saying all rumors, including their own, should be taken with a grain of salt.

There Are No Changes to Already Announced Xbox Game Pass Titles

While the official response hardly rules out the possibility of the leaked restructuring still happening in spring 2027, Microsoft did offer at least one additional assurance: "there are no changes to previously announced games coming to Game Pass Ultimate on day one." That is an important provision, as by GameRant's count, the service currently has 31 day-one titles explicitly confirmed for 2027. Of those, only Fable and Persona 4 Revival have locked down their release dates. A few dozen more games could still end up launching on the service next year as well, leaving Microsoft with a substantial pool of day-one commitments to honor. In that context, its assurance that all existing releases are still happening is not an insignificant one.

Notably, Microsoft did not rule out the possibility of dropping unannounced commitments to day-one releases. Rumors from late June 2026 pointed to all future Game Pass deals being put on hold while the new Xbox leadership figures out the scope of the company's restructuring meant to ensure profitability after a quarter of a century's worth of losses.

Microsoft has already shown that its day-one policy can change on a franchise-by-franchise basis, having previously announced that future Call of Duty games would no longer launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one. The current XGP Ultimate offering consequently advertises day-one access to select titles while explicitly excluding Call of Duty entries from that commitment.
